PSHE - Personal, Social, Health and Economic PHSE at Hamstel Junior School: Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. It helps children and young people to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most of life and work. PSHE education also helps pupils to achieve their academic potential. Most of PSHE education became statutory for all schools from September 2020 under the Children and Social Work Act 2017. This now includes Relationships Education (including Sex Education for our older children) and Health Education. At Hamstel Junior School, our aim is to offer our children a wealth of perspectives about the world we live in. We encourage them to believe that they have an element of control over at least some of the situations they encounter. We want our children to enjoy and be sure of their place in the world. By the time they leave us, we hope for them to have high expectations and the knowledge – and confidence - to make the right choices for themselves in order to live a happy and healthy life. 11+ What is the 11+? The 11+ is a series of tests sat by children to gain a place in year 7 at several local schools. The purpose of the 11+ test is to select the children who have the potential to thrive in an environment which provides a highly academic curriculum and a range of challenging pursuits. Curriculum Overview The school follows the National Curriculum which was introduced in September 2014. Children are taught the three core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. They are also taught the foundation subjects: History, Geography, Design and Technology (D & T), Physical Education, Computing, French, Art and Design and Music. Religious Education is also taught through the locally agreed syllabus. These subjects are often approached through topic-based, cross curricular learning which encompasses National Curriculum core and foundation subjects in a relevant and meaningful way. Teaching will involve a variety of styles with great emphasis being placed on the high quality of children’s work.
