Reading

 

Autumn Term

In the autumn term Year 6 children will:

  • have a reading age of 11 years

  • read age appropriate books with confidence and fluency (to include whole novels)

  • read aloud with intonation that shows understanding 

  • work out the meaning of word from the context

  • retrieve information from non-fiction

  • predict what might happen from details stated and implied

  • summarise main ideas, identifying key details and using quotations for illustration

Spring Term

In the spring term Year 6 children will:

  • have a reading age of 11 years and 3 months

  • explain and discuss their understanding of what they have read, drawing inferences and justifying these with evidence

  • evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader

  • make comparisons within and across books

Writing

 

Autumn Term

In the Autumn Term Year 6 children learn:

  • use joined, consistent handwriting style

  • choose words to create atmosphere

  • create noun phrases that create atmosphere

  • embed dialogue that tells the reader about a character

  • choose vocabulary to signal how formal the text is

  • use inverted commas correctly in a story

  • evaluate and edit by ensuring correct subject and verb agreement

  • evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of own and others' writing with reasoning

  • proofreads for spelling errors linked to the spelling statements

  • use a combination of adverbs, ENPs and prepositional phrases to add detail

  • embed dialogue that moves the story forward

  • use modal verbs to suggest different degrees of certainty

  • extend sentences with relative clauses

  • extend some sentences with subordinate clauses

  • use commas to punctuate clauses

  • use a range of linking words to make links between sentences

  • select language that shows good awareness of the reader

  • evaluate and edit by proposing reasoned changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning

  • proofread for punctuation errors including capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, inverted commas

Spring Term

In the Spring Term Year 6 children learn:

  • use a range of linking word to make links between paragraphs

  • start some sentences with a subordinate clause

  • use ing and ed clauses

  • attempt to use semi-colons, dashes, colons and hyphens

  • write effectively for a range of purpose and audiences

  • use verb tenses consistently throughout writing

  • use the passive voice in some sentences

  • evaluate and edit by ensuring the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing

  • proofreads for punctuation errors including semi-colons, colons, dashes, use of hyphens

  • write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences by selecting the appropriate form and drawing independently on what they have learned related to literary language, structure and characterisation

  • distinguish between the language of speech and writing and choose the appropriate register

  • exercise an assured and conscious control over levels of formality, manipulating grammar and vocabulary to achieve this

  • use punctuation precisely to enhance meaning and avoid ambiguity

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

 

Autumn Term

In the Autumn Term Year 6 children will:

  • select and spell the appropriate plural endings for  range of words

  • spell words with double consonants correctly

  • spell words with the prefixes un, de, im, in, il, ir, auto, trans, bi, tri, semi, aero, micro, super, sub, inter, tele, mis, anti, photo and hyphenated prefixes

  • spell words ending in tial, cial, cious and tious

  • spell words with 'ay' and 'ough' sounds

  • choose 'ph' or 'f' and spell words correctly

  • demonstrate familiarity with eight word classes and their use

  • recognise and write all four sentence types

  • identify the subject, verb and object in a sentence

  • identify and use expanded noun phrases for description and concision

  • identify tense accurately 

  • demarcate sentences accurately (beginning and end)

  • spell the list of Autumn Term 'Words We Need To Know'

  • spell words ending in -ant/-ance/ancy and -ent/ency and recognise which ending is more likely for unfamiliar words

  • spell words that end in -ous -al -el and -le

  • spell words ending in -ible/-ibly and -abe/-ably and recognise which ending is more likely for unfamiliar words

  • distinguish between coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and can choose the appropriate ones to link clauses

  • identify and use main clause and subordinate clauses (relative clause included) in a sentence

  • distinguish between formal and informal English; standard and non-standard English

  • ensure correct subject-verb agreement

  • identify, form and expand contractions accurately

Spring Term

  • Use commas to mark clauses or phrases including fronted adverbials

  • spell words with the ending -cial and -tial and recognise which is the more likely ending for unfamiliar words

  • add suffixes which begin with vowel letters to words ending in -fer

  • identify and use the active and passive form; can accurately convert active to passive/ passive to active

  • use prefix and suffixes to change the meaning of words/ change the word class of words

  • recognise and form words from the same word family

  • use apostrophes correctly for omission and singular possession and most accurately for plural possession

  • identify and use colons, semi-colons, single dashes and hypens

  • spell the list of Spring Term 'Words We Need To Know'

  • use a hyphen to join prefixes which end in a vowel to a root word which begins with one

  • spell given homophones and chooses which one to use in the context of the sentence

  • recognise where pronouns have been used to clarity and cohesion

  • choose pronouns for clarity and cohesion with accuracy

  • recognise and selects a range of forms for regular and irregular verbs

  • identify modal verbs to express certainty and possibility

  • choose the correct modal to ensure meaning

  • select appropriate synonyms and antonyms for a wide range of words

  • identify and use punctuation to indicate parenthesis​
