Overviews

Across the year, Year 3 children learn to:

  • Plan the texts they will be writing, first using a story map and then a box up
  • Use the language of five story parts (opening, build up, problem, resolution, ending)
  • Organise ideas into each story part
  • Create paragraphs to organise ideas around a theme
  • Develop endings
  • Use upper and lower case letters of correct size orientation and relationship
  • Join letters appropriately if they are not already doing so
  • Leave appropriately sized spaces between words

Across the year in spelling, we:

  •    Revise the Year 2 spelling curriculum
  •    Learn the Words We Need to Know
  •    Use the first 2/3 letters of a word to check its spelling in the dictionary
  •    Take dictation for spelling and punctuation taught so far
  •    Practise words from our spelling logs
  •    Proofread our own work for spelling errors
